Tips For TV Commercials and Movie Extras! (beginners)
Extras are usually known as background actors in feature films and movie sets. An extra performer can also be in various other appearances such as TV shows, commercials, music videos, industrials, operas (read homepage article for more info), infomercials, audience member (seat filler), and large theater performances. A good extra blends in smoothly and subtlety in the scene behind or near the protagonist or principal actors.
Never call casting directors or casting agencies about getting work or ask them questions! Nor show up to their office without an appointment. Casting directors work very hard to cast and audition actors and extras for many projects. I can assure you, they will call you if they are interested. Consider visiting the casting agency website for more information or mailing out your headshot and resume.
Be courteous and treat everyone on set with respect and dignity. You never really know the person who you are talking too but; “The true measure of an individual is how he treats a person who can do him absolutely no good.” Ann Landers (Esther Pauline Friedman)
Network with other extras on set. It is a good opportunity to share auditions and casting calls information!
It is great to work with movie stars whether as a principal or an extra. As an extra, you should never talk to the principal actors (unless they first talk to you),ask them for an autograph or take pictures of them. It is considered totally inappropriate and can led to you being thrown off the set!
Working on a movie set may last most of the day! 12 hours spent on a set is not unusually! Be prepare by eating a health and hearty meal and sleeping well the night before. Also, bring a small book (a paperback or pocket book) to help the time go by. You will have more energy throughout the whole day and your day will go more smoothly.
Arrive to the set on time, always be alert and listen to the (ads) assistant directors. Specially when stunts or action scenes are involved. You do not want to be remembered as the one who got hurt on set for not listening!

Extra Extra Tips
Do not limit yourself to only TV, commercial or movie extra work. The Metropolitan Opera in New York City held a huge casting call for its production of "War and Peace." In addition, NY1 local news channel aired a segment about this Metropolitan Opera audition. Casting directors were casting for people to play the role of soldiers for its winter debut. Contact theater companies in your area and inquire about working as a background extra. You will never get an answer unless you ask!
About Film Festivals
Independents film festivals provide a platform for directors to showcase their film projects. These projects may vary from short films, silence movies and documentaries. Each film festival also has a theme or style that ranges anywhere from ethic like the Latino Film Festival to regional like the New York Film Festival or the Sundance Film Festival based out of Park City, Utah. Up and coming actors also get an opportunity to show their craft. Film festivals organizers have the daunting task of selecting films out of hundreds of entries.
A great way to participate in Film Festivals is to volunteer!

Sometimes even major featured films make their way into a film festival. Spiderman 3 premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival in New York City.
